Rapid Medical Evaluation Process
Saint Mary’s Emergency Department features a medical provider who works in concert with the nursing staff who triage (i.e., initially assess) our patients. Care can be implemented at triage if needed, and tests can be initiated even before a patient arrives in his or her room. By expediting care early on, patient satisfaction has increased and wait times have decreased.
Computerized Physician Order Entry
Saint Mary’s has the only emergency department in the Reno-Sparks area with computerized physician order entry, which reduces the risk of treatment and medication errors.
Accredited Chest Pain Center
Saint Mary’s is also home to the region's first Chest Pain Center to be accredited by the Society of Chest Pain Centers. Saint Mary’s knows that “time is muscle.” Saint Mary’s actively collaborates with first responders so that a cardiologist and the cardiac catheterization lab, or cath lab, can be activated before the patient even arrives. This early identification of heart attack symptoms allows for more rapid and aggressive treatment, which leads to better outcomes.
Door-to-Balloon Time
When it comes to heart attacks, the faster the intervention, the better the outcome. The American Heart Association, Society of Chest Pain Centers and American College of Cardiology all recommend a door-to-balloon time of 90 minutes for heart attack patients. Door-to-balloon is the time it takes for a heart attack patient to receive an angioplasty once he or she arrives at the hospital. An angioplasty is a life-saving procedure where a balloon-like device is used to open up the impacted artery. Saint Mary’s interdisciplinary team of caregivers takes a collaborative approach to patient care and is always looking for new ways to improve door-to-balloon time for patients. We are proud of the fact that we lead the region in door-to-balloon time, with an average of 76.9 minutes. In fact, Saint Mary’s leads the region in heart attack care, according to the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Saint Mary’s ER “Kids Club” ensures privacy and a kid-friendly environment. All of our nurses are certified in emergency Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
